The Foundation of a Long-Lasting Deck Finish

Every successful deck staining project starts with a properly cleaned surface.

We begin by applying a soft wash treatment designed to eliminate organic growth such as mildew, algae, and mold that naturally develop in exterior wood. This step neutralizes contaminants at the root level β€” not just on the surface.

Once the treatment has done its job, we follow with a high-pressure wash to remove built-up debris, surface contaminants, and any remaining traces of previous stain or paint. This process opens the wood grain and creates a clean, uniform surface that’s ready to accept stain.

Jobsite Cleanup & Finish Standards

After the deck itself is cleaned, we take the time to clean the surrounding areas. Any residue created during the washing process is removed from nearby siding and surfaces. We also finish with a pure water cleaning of exterior windows near the work area.

This final step ensures no streaking, spotting, or residue is left on your windows β€” and reflects our commitment to leaving your home better than we found it.

Once cleaning is complete, the deck is allowed to dry naturally for five to seven days, depending on weather conditions. Proper drying is essential for stain penetration and long-term performance.

Detailed Surface Preparation

After the deck has fully dried, we move into detailed surface preparation.

This phase includes removing any remaining hardware, addressing small imperfections, and replacing individual boards when necessary. We also perform light sanding in areas where the pressure washing process has raised or β€œfurred” the wood grain.

It’s important to note that this is NOT a full sanding of the deck. We intentionally preserve a slight amount of natural texture, which allows the stain to properly bond with the wood. Over-sanding can reduce penetration and lead to premature failure.

Our goal during this step is to refine the surface without compromising long-term performance, ensuring the deck is ready to accept stain evenly and durably

Home & Landscape Protection

Before any stain is applied, we take deliberate steps to protect your home and surrounding property.

For elevated or lifted decks, protection is focused primarily on the areas beneath the deck structure. Plastic sheeting is carefully installed under the deck to prevent drips or runoff from contacting siding, trim, or surfaces below.

Additional protection is placed around nearby windows, doors, and other exterior elements where staining work could come into contact.

These measures allow us to work thoroughly and deliberately without risking unintended contact with finished surfaces.

At ground level, we use drop cloth systems to protect concrete, patios, walkways, and surrounding hard surfaces. In many cases, drop cloths are layered or overlapped to provide added protection and prevent seep-through or accidental staining during application.

Landscaping is handled separately and with care. Plants, flowers, and surrounding vegetation near the work area are protected and monitored throughout the project to ensure they remain undisturbed.

Our goal is to complete the work while keeping the rest of your property clean, controlled, and intact from start to finish.

Hand-Applied Stain.

No Spraying.

Hand-Applied Stain Application

Once preparation and protection are complete, the staining process begins.

Every deck we stain is applied by hand using brushes, not sprayed. This allows the stain to be worked deep into the wood grain, ensuring consistent coverage across deck boards, railings, posts, and detailed areas that spraying often misses.

We apply stain in two controlled coats, allowing proper absorption between applications. This method uses more product than spray applications, but results in a finish that holds up longer, wears more evenly, and maintains its appearance over time.

By applying stain by hand, we’re able to deliver a finish that looks natural, performs better, and lasts longer β€” especially in harsh Midwest weather conditions.

A Local Company Built the Right Way

Clear View Exterior Care began while I was in college as a student-athlete looking for a way to support myself and take responsibility for my education. Early mornings on job sites followed by practices, classes, and travel quickly taught me the value of discipline, preparation, and showing up when it matters.

What started as a small student-run operation has grown into a team-driven company built on those same principles. Today, Clear View is focused on creating opportunities for the next generation of student-athletes β€” helping them gain real-world experience, strong work habits, and the chance to grow both on and off the field.
