Not every deck β or homeowner β needs the same type of stain. Thatβs why we use different ProLuxe products depending on the condition of the wood, existing coatings, desired appearance, and long-term maintenance goals.
Choosing the right stain is just as important as proper preparation and application. Some homeowners prefer a more natural, oil-based finish that highlights the wood grain, while others need a more protective solution designed to reduce maintenance and extend the life of the deck.
Our role is to guide you through these options so your deck not only looks right on day one β but continues to perform over time.

ProLuxe SRD finishes are oil-based stains designed to enhance the natural beauty of wood while allowing the grain to remain visible. These finishes are commonly chosen for newer decks or well-maintained wood surfaces where appearance is a top priority.
SRD stains offer a more traditional look with natural brown and wood-tone color options. Because they penetrate into the wood rather than forming a thick surface layer, they provide a natural appearance but require more regular maintenance than solid finishes and offer less long-term UV resistance.
Newer or well-maintained decks
Home owners who prefer natural wood appearance
Decks without existing paint or solid stains
We typically recommend a one-coat refresh of flat, high-traffic areas every two years to maintain protection and appearance. These refreshes focus on walking surfaces, stairs, and other areas that experience regular foot traffic and weather exposure.
With SRD finishes, UV exposure is also an important consideration. Because these finishes are designed to penetrate the wood and maintain a natural appearance, railings, spindles, and other non-walking surfaces should be periodically inspected for UV fade or sun wear. Unlike solid finishes, SRD coatings do not create a thick surface layer, so prolonged sun exposure alone can gradually affect color consistency over time.
During maintenance visits, we evaluate the entire deck to determine whether select railings, spindles, or sun-exposed surfaces would benefit from a refresh alongside the flat areas. While many decks align well with a two-year maintenance cycle, lighter finishes may require more frequent attention, and in some cases annual touch-ups may be recommended to maintain maximum appearance and color clarity.

ProLuxe Solid Matte finishes are designed for decks that need added protection, coverage, or long-term durability. This option is ideal for older decks, surfaces with existing coatings, or homeowners who want to minimize ongoing maintenance.
Solid matte finishes create a thicker protective barrier that offers superior UV resistance and helps conceal wear, discoloration, or mismatched previous stains. While the wood grain is less visible, the tradeoff is significantly extended performance and fewer reapplications.
Older or weathered decks
Decks with existing paint or solid stains
Homeowners seeking lower long-term maintenance
Homeowners interested in multiple stain colors & options
We typically recommend a one-coat refresh between three and four years from the initial application. In most cases, this refresh is only necessary on flat, high-traffic areas such as walking paths, stairs, and open deck surfaces β not the entire deck.
ProLuxe Solid Matte is formulated to bond deeply to the wood and resist peeling or flaking like many traditional solid stains. While the finish is highly durable, it can still experience scratching and surface wear in areas exposed to repeated foot traffic, furniture movement, or heavy use. This type of wear is mechanical in nature and does not indicate a failure of the coating.
To stay ahead of this wear, we recommend annual checkups to ensure your deck remains properly protected. These inspections allow us to identify wear early and address it with quick, targeted refresh coats when needed β extending the life of the finish and helping avoid more extensive work down the road.
